Default Concerns about exercise for obese

I am obese at 17 stone, but am fairly active. I am beginning to train for the Race for Life in May for Cancer Research but am worried about beginning to train as I have been reading that the strain it puts on your heart is damaging. Does anyone of a similar weight have any ideas about what exercise is the most suitable (not swimming- I live about 150 miles from the nearest pool!)

Thanks,
K

If you haven't done any exercise for sometime then it is always a good idea to visit your doctor before beginning a programme. But yes I would be inclined to start off with something fairly low impact, and build up slowly. Even some brisk walking will improve your fitness levels at the beginning.
