    Default lose a stone

My expanding waistline means that my wardrobe now has several pairs of jeans that are tooo tight for my fat stomach.

    I'm 6' 2" weigh 15stone 1lb and have high cholesterol as well.

I cannot bring myself to replace my favorite jeans with track suit bottoms and intend to lose a stone this year.

I drink too much alcohol and exercise too little.

14lbs is just over one pound per month. surely I can do it!!

At 15st 1lb my BMI is currently 27.14

If I lose a stone and get to 14st 1lb my BMI will be 25.34 which is still higher than it should be.

I need to get to 13st 12lb which will just about get me within a healthy body mass index at 24.95

How important is your BMI reading?

of course you'l be able to do it!

Just try and keep focused and remember why you started the diet in the first place,

Not sure about the BMI readings, i personally dont think they are as important as some people suggest.
But everyone thinks different, and everyone is happy at different weights.

I don't rate BMI results as being all that important to be honest.

The reasoning for this, is that the BMI does not take into consideration the body's composition. It is a relationship between your height and your weight on the scales.

For example! .... a bodybuilder who is 5ft 9 and weighing 15 stone, would give a BMI of 31 = obese. Yet their bodyfat may be at 10%, it is their muscular weight which is registering high on the scales, which then gives a high BMI.

It is a useful guideline, but not to be strictly observed to the letter!

    Hi Fiona,

Thanks for the info. I am no bodybuilder so I'm pretty sure that my bodyfat amounts to more than 10% unfortunately.

Is there a more reliable indicator of body fat than BMI?

There are various ways of measuring bodyfat - you can use the bodyfat scales or try using calipers to measure. Calipers are more accurate than the scales, the scales can differ in values wildly! ...depending on what model you use.

I actually would suggest just using the mirror and a tape measure.

Also taking photos of yourself periodically (front, back and sides....in underwear!) is a really good monitor of progress.
